Given that the purpose of a railway network is to serve the general public, The Shatin and Centrel line (SCL) is the latest strategic railway lines recommended in the Railway Development Strategy 2000. Since 2008, MTR Corporation Limited, the operator of MTR system and the developers of SCL project, was doing the public consultation for that. In order to meet the community’s need, leaflets and newsletters were published to the public, easily accessible information and collect suggestions. The construction of SCL has commenced in 2012. The SCL will traverse several districts. It will serve the New Territories, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
Key information to the SCL
The project comprises two parts:
- Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section:
It will extend the existing Ma On Shan Line from Tai Wai to the West Rail Line via East Kowloon to form the “East West Corridor”. Expected completion date is 2019.
- Hung Hom to Admiralty Section:
It will extend the existing East Rail Line across the harbour to Wan Chai North and Admiralty to form the “North South Corridor”. “Expected completion date is 2021.

The SCL will extend the railway network to areas not yet served by the MTR. It will provide direct and convenient interchanges to facilitate efficient and reliable access to every corner of the territory, bringing with it substantial social and economic benefits.

Also relieving road traffic congestion and pressure on the Tai Wai to Kowloon Tong section of the East Rail Line, the Shek Kip Mei to Prince Edward section of the Kwun Tong Line (Tiu Keng Leng to Yau Ma Tei) and the Nathan Road corridor of the Tsuen Wan Line (Central to Tsuen Wan). And acting as a catalyst for the redevelopment of old districts that currently rely on road transport, such as Hung Hom, Ho Man Tin, To Kwa Wan and Ma Tau Wai, by providing them with a fast and convenient rail service. Next, providing convenient access to the multi-purpose stadium and other recreational facilities in the Kai Tak New Development Area, thereby spurring the growth of tourism and commercial activities and creating new employment opportunities. Increasing the value of properties along the railway corridor. The last but not least, reducing noise and roadside air pollution by reducing road traffic, thereby improving the quality of life, as the trains are electrically powered and emission-free.
